Explosion of crocuses causes spring fever
Onlookers stopped to gaze upon the views of the lilac woodland crocus (Crocus Tommasinianus), which has bloomed across the iconic city landscape during the recent warm weather.
The Mediterranean plant, often known as the Snow Crocus, traditionally blossoms in February after the snowdrops and before the daffodils.
Head gardeners at Cambridge University colleges along The Backs had feared that recent heavy snowfall would damage the plants’ growth.
But Dennis Footman, head gardener at Trinity College, said the wintry weather has had “no impact” on the flowers.
He said: “The crocus flowers have kick-started spring and are just about peaking now.
“They are the first to really come through after the snowdrop and help form an iconic landscape for residents and tourists.
“Initially, I was slightly worried that the heavy snowfall in the last month would have been too heavy for the plant to grow. But they have come through nicely bringing through a lot of colour.”
