Local florists log long hours readying for Valentine's Day

NEWARK -- Flowers go hand in hand with Valentine's Day.
And while today's holiday is like the Super Bowl for florists, they are not complaining about the long hours they put in before the big event.
Kim Hagans, of Kimel's Flowers on West Church Street, already had been up two days straight on Monday morning and didn't see an end in sight. But as her business partner Melissa Kennedy explains, it's all about pleasing people.
"We bend over backwards and do everything we can, but we will still get those guys that come straggling in on Valentine's Day at 4:30 or 5 p.m.," Kennedy said. "They know they have to buy flowers before they can go home."
While red roses are the mainstay of Valentine's Day, Kennedy said that what has changed during the 16 years they have been in business is the "who" in ordering.
Nowadays, 95 percent of the people ordering the flowers are men, and women are not ordering as much as in the past.
In addition to live flowers, Kimel's also stocks chocolates, fuzzy stuffed bears, silk flowers, plants, candles and bags of rose petals.
