“Imported roses are 50% more expensive than local ones.
“The wholesale price for both the local and imported roses has actually increased by three-fold this year,” said Lee.
Despite the price hike, some florists in Penang still enjoyed brisk business with Valentine’s Day just around the corner.
G-Ray Florist shop supervisor Rayean Lim said the higher prices did not dampen demand for roses.
“A bouquet of 12 roses is selling for between RM150 and RM200, which is 50% higher than last year,” she said.
“Generally, customers do not question too much about the price as their desire is to show their love for their partners,” she added.
Seah Chin Eng of Eden Flora and Gift Centre has ordered 20% more roses as she was confident the sales would be better than last year.
“In fact, I have been receiving bookings since last month,” said the florist.
