Local florists: Red roses still popular symbol of love on Valentine's Day

Most American men are in a bit of a red rose rut when it comes
to Valentine’s Day, but local floral designers say that’s beginning
to change.
“Red roses are still the biggest selling flowers for Valentine’s
Day, and that’s fine if it’s what a woman really wants,” said Patti
Hines with Leilawood Flowers. “But we try to talk to the men a bit,
find out their wife’s or girlfriend’s favorite colors and flowers.
Some women might prefer pink or yellow roses. Others might prefer
tulips or tropical blossoms.”
And, yes, it is usually men coming in to order the flowers for
Valentine’s Day, Hines said.
“We’re seeing more women who order either for their husbands, or
for special women in their lives like sisters or best friends, but
the vast majority of our customers this week will be men.”
When women order floral arrangements, they tend to concentrate
on items like candy or balloons, with just a plant or two thrown
into the mix, she said.
