9/11: 10 years later - Remembering the day the world changed
11.09.11
PASCAGOULA, Mississippi -- Ten years after the 9/11 terrorist attacks , the images and emotions of that day remain vivid.
Ask anyone about that tragic day and they generally can recall where they were and what they were doing when they first heard the dreadful news that America was under attack.
A new world
Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd said he was headed to the northern part of the state for a fishing trip when an official with the FBI called and told him of the terrorists attacks.
"I had to turn around and get back to Jackson County," Byrd said. "I was told to secure all the state buildings in the county and heighten security."
Byrd said the days that followed brought numerous security measures that still exist 10 years later.
For example, Byrd said, before September ended in 2001 he was instructed to install metal detectors in the Jackson County Courthouse in Pascagoula.
"It was a new world, and we didn't know what to expect," Byrd said.
