Volunteers Are Needed for America in Bloom Projects
20.05.12
About 18 people attended a kickoff meeting Wednesday night at
city hall for Washington's planned participation in the 2012
America in Bloom (AIB) program.
The city is in the process of applying for the program, which
recognizes communities for their beautification and enhancement
efforts through plantings and other activities. The deadline to
register is Feb. 28.
Community volunteers, including Dave Wehmeyer, Sally Bocklage,
Mayor Sandy Lucy and Parks Director Darren Dunkle, among others,
are serving on the local AIB committee and leading the planning
this year.
Wehmeyer said organizations, civic groups and individuals are
needed to adopt about 21 projects that the committee would like to
see completed before the judges visit Washington sometime this
summer.
A local Boy Scout volunteered to beautify the train caboose park
near the riverfront for his Eagle Scout project.
Other projects identified by Wehmeyer and Dunkle include
plantings or enhancements at Burger Park, the riverfront plaza,
Barklage Field, the city pool, McLaughlin Field, city park
pavilions, the gazebo at Lions Lake, Phoenix Park, wildlife food
plot areas, city hall and the public works building. All projects
will need to be approved by the park board.
