Men opt for 'women's jobs' as recession bites
20.05.12
Swapping shovels for sewing kits, the number of men running their own
dress-making firm is up 9 per cent and those working as beauticians and
make-up artists are both up 11 per cent.
And in the kitchen, men making trendy cupcakes in their own bakery are up 71
per cent, the study by business insurance broker Simply Business found.
That is up a staggering 370 per cent - nearly five times - when compared with
2008.
Unemployment in the UK currently stands at 2.67 million, up from 2.48 million
last February and the highest for 16 years.
Jason Stockwood, from Simply Business, said: "Figures show there has been a
general decline in the construction, engineering and manufacturing
industries over the past few years.
"The effect has been an increase in unemployment in areas that are
traditionally thought of as 'masculine' occupations.
"Understandably, these men have had to look elsewhere for an income.
"Many of these have moved into lines of work that have traditionally been
associated with women, such as hairdressing, beauty and floristry."
